Replacing a router or switching internet providers probably does not feel like a security decision. Most people are thinking about faster speeds, better coverage, and getting their phones, computers, and televisions connected again.
Depending on how your security system is configured, some connected features may rely on that same network. Cameras, video doorbells, smart locks, automation devices, and other equipment can sometimes be affected when Wi-Fi settings change.
At AlarmOne, we want customers to know when a routine technology update may be worth mentioning to us. If something stops working after a network change, it does not necessarily mean the equipment has failed. Sometimes it simply needs to be reconnected or adjusted.
What Can a Wi-Fi Change Affect?
A change to your internet service does not automatically mean your entire security system will stop working. Many professionally monitored systems use other communication methods for important alarm signals, while certain cameras, smart devices, mobile features, or other connected equipment may use your local network for some functions.
Problems are more likely to appear when you:
- Change internet service providers
- Replace your router
- Rename your Wi-Fi network
- Update your Wi-Fi password
Phones and computers usually make the change obvious because they immediately ask for new login information. Security equipment can be easier to overlook. You may not notice that a camera or connected device has lost communication until you try to use that feature later.
If something stops working after a network change, tell us what changed and when. That gives our team a much better starting point.
Check the Features You Use Most
After replacing a router or changing your Wi-Fi settings, take a few minutes to check the security features you normally use.
Can you still view your cameras? Is your video doorbell available through the app? Are connected locks or automation devices responding as expected? Do the mobile features you use regularly still work?
If one of those features is suddenly unavailable, resist the temptation to start changing settings immediately. The timing of the problem can be useful information, especially if everything was working normally before your network changed.
Have You Recently Changed Your Internet or Wi-Fi?
If you replaced a router, switched providers, or changed your Wi-Fi information and something in your security system is no longer working as expected, AlarmOne can help. Call (954) 358-1721 or contact us online so our team can help identify what changed and what may need to be reconnected or adjusted.
Before You Reset Anything, Call Us
When a connected device goes offline, pressing the reset button can feel like the fastest solution. With professionally installed security equipment, however, it is usually better to find out what caused the issue first.
A factory reset may remove settings that were configured during installation or require a device to be enrolled again. Depending on the equipment, restoring communication may be much simpler than starting over.
Before resetting cameras, hubs, video doorbells, or other connected security devices, give AlarmOne a call. We can help determine whether the issue is related to your network and recommend the right next step for your system.
Keep AlarmOne in the Loop
Internet providers change. Routers get replaced. Wi-Fi passwords are updated. New connected devices are added around homes and businesses all the time.
If you make one of those changes and notice that part of your security system is working differently afterward, let us know. You do not need to diagnose the problem yourself. Simply telling us what changed can make it easier to determine where the issue started.
It is also helpful to contact us before making major network changes if you know your security system includes connected devices. A quick conversation can help you understand what may need attention afterward.
We Are Here After Installation Day
Your relationship with AlarmOne does not end when your security system is installed. Technology changes over time, and we are here to help when those changes affect the equipment you rely on.
If you recently switched internet providers, replaced your router, changed your Wi-Fi settings, or noticed that a connected security feature is no longer working properly, contact AlarmOne at (954) 358-1721 or reach out to our team online.
We will help you figure out what changed and get your system working the way it should.
